MSA Fundraiser

Do you find yourself wondering what to do with yourself or the little ones as winter approaches? The MSA card offers discounts to many fun indoor activities around Salt Lake. Let the kids run wild at the Discovery Gateway children's museum, take a dip at the Fairmont Aquatic Center, bowl strike after strike at Olympus Hills Lane, capture smiles with a photo session from Aubrie Tolman Photography, treat yourself to some Costa Vida or B & D Burgers, and MUCH MORE - all at a discounted rate!

The cards are a steal at $10 each and pay for themselves after one oil change a jiffy lube ($10 off unlimited oil changes!).

Contact me if you're interested and thank you for supporting our MSA!!

First Year Library Tour

Peter Kraus, of the U of U's Marriott Library will be hosting a private tour of the library for us on Friday, November 19th at 1:00 pm. Strollers are welcome. We'll be meeting at the East entrance of the library by the credit union. Hope to see you there!

Up and Running!

Hey all,

So I took a break from the blog. I figured there was zero interest in it so I would just let it fizzle away . . . and die.

But then I got talking to some of my fellow first year spouses and they came up with some brilliant ways that we could use this blog. First of all, we'll be doing first year spotlights just like the MSA blog. These spotlights will run every two weeks (let me know if you'd be interested in being spotlighted by sending me an email or leaving a comment). Also, I'll be posting reminders about MSA activities, specifically first year activities. Let me know if you have an idea for an activity or if you would like to help plan or host one :)

I've had so much fun getting to know many of you! Let me know if you have any other ideas or if you would like to be involved with MSA!

Getting to Know You

It was great meeting many of you at the BBQ and White Coat Ceremony! I'm looking forward to getting to know you all better. I have posted links to family blogs on the side, email me if you would like yours included.

Wasn't the White Coat Ceremony great? I must admit I got a bit teary at times. Hearing all the students and doctors recite the Hippocratic Oath was something I had been looking forward to for some time now. Actually experiencing it made me realize how blessed Bob & I (well, all of us!) are to be here beginning this next phase of our lives.

I was surprised by how busy Bob was during orientation but it was nice to get a small taste of what to expect for the next little (okay, very long) while. Bob and I have spent a lot of time together this summer and I am a bit sad to leave the lazy days behind. As I took down the countdown to the white coat ceremony I wondered what I should put up in its place. Maybe I'll put up a countdown to when we no longer have to share our significant others with school, rotations, and crazy work hours.
Ha ha . . . I don't think it works in years. :)

Save the date!

Hey all,

It has been awhile since I've posted. Hope you have all been busy enjoying your summer :)

Just wanted to remind you of some fun activities up ahead. First off we have the White Coat Ceremony on July 20th. It will be at Kingsbury Hall at 1:00 PM. Bob and I will be kicking off this event at Ruth's Diner with our families, an amazing diner up Emigration Canyon. If you haven't been there: GO!! They have a patio area out back and live music. The atmosphere and food are top notch! (Also, check out Blue Plate Diner!)

So, back to the subject. The next activity is the First Year BBQ on Thursday, August 19 from 6 - 7:30. An email was sent to all first years about how to RSVP and where it will be held. If you did not receive that email or need that info feel free to email me and I will forward it to you.

And last, but not least, the All School Picnic will be on August 26 from 6 - 9. This will be a great opportunity for you to meet all the other great people on the MSA board! If you need that info I can forward you that email as well.

I'm excited to meet you all!

-Michelle

P.S. Email me your blog address if you would like a link posted to it on this blog. I've received a few emails with blog addresses but I think I will wait to post them until we get a few more. Also, if you're still interested in running the Halloween Half Marathon there is still time (12 weeks) to train for it!

Michael Scott's Dunder Mifflin Scranton Merideth Palmer Memorial Celebrity Rabies Awareness Pro-Am Fun Run Race for the Cure

For any of you Office fans (or former office fans - this season has been kind of lame) you will get from the above title that this post is about running. The Fabulous First-Years Running Group will commence training on Tuesday, May 18th at 8:00 AM. We will meet in the parking lot of the post office on Sunnyside Ave. Our first few runs will be approx. 1 mile and we will be working our way up. First we will begin training for a 5k, then a 10k, and then (for all you half crazy/daring folks) we will begin training for the Halloween Half Marathon in one of the scariest cities in Utah - Provo!! Registration for all races will be out of pocket, if we have enough people running we can do our own fun 5k (shirts included :D)! If you are interested in joining the running group please email me so I can have a rough head count. Feel free to bring your jogging stroller (I'll have mine) and your medical student significant other (since it is summer, they can join us!).

Hope you see you all bright and early on Tuesday. Let me know if nights would work better for any of you and we can try to get an evening group going!

PS. The picture is off the internet. It is not me.

Welcome, First Years!

Hello everyone!

We are all very blessed to be here! I've been told by many who are further along in their medical education that the support and friendship of fellow medical families is a cherished component of this long journey. As the First Year Representative of the MSA (Medical Student Alliance) it is my hope that we can all get to know and help each other, that we can forge friendships and have fun.

This blog will be a place to post get togethers and activities specifically for the spouses and families of first year medical students. I'm still trying to decide what we should do. If you would like to suggest an activity I would love your input. These activities will be separate from MSA activities . We do not have a budget and I would prefer that most of the things we do together be inexpensive or free to ensure that all can participate.

I would love to meet you all! I can help you move in, get settled, and share desserts. Let me know if you need help finding housing or getting to know the city better.

P.S. My husband just came back from Freshman Orientation and informed me that the first year classes will be combined with the Dental Students. I'm not sure if there is an MSA type thing for dental families, if there isn't please join us!! We'd love to get to know you, too :D
